CHN425/525 Issues in Modern Chinese Literature

This course provides an introduction to the major debates in the field of modern Chinese literary and cultural studies, particularly as it has developed in the English-speaking world, by discussing selected recent publications. It thus functions as a general survey on the current state of the field. Major topics include modernity, subjectivity, translation, nationalism, gender, revolution, urbanization, globalization, and diaspora. Although the course is primarily intended for first-year graduate students, advanced undergraduate students who are interested in cultural theory and criticism are welcome.

Each week the student will be asked to read a recently published book and write a short review essay, addressing such issues as the book’s implied audience, structure, methodology, major themes, and use of evidence, to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the book. Generally, the review essay should go a step beyond simple summaries to raise questions for discussion or identify areas for further research. Suggested topics will be given each week. Your book review is due on the day that the book is to be discussed in class. No late papers will be accepted.
