This course examines the changing constructions of gender, sexuality, and desire, as core components of self in premodern China. Topics covered include normative gender roles; family structures including arranged marriage, polygamy, and filial piety, the body, sexuality including same-sex desires and the cut of chastity, as well as the connections between gender roles and yinyang symbolism.
