Red elderberry (sambucus racemosa)

elderberryThe red elderberry (Sambucus racemosa) is a red variety of the elderberry. It is a small tree or shrub, reaching six meters tall, and is found primarily on the coast of the Pacific Northwest. It has oppositely arranged, deciduous leaves, divided into leaflets of five to seven and lance-shaped. They are sharp-toothed and pointed at the ends, and somewhat hairy beneath. It produces white, creamy flowers that carry an unpleasant smell. They are numerous and organized in a round cluster similar to a parasol. The fruits are bright red berries with three to five seeds per fruit.
