Meet Our RARE AmeriCorps Participant: Carrie Courtney

Carrie Courtney RARE Resource Assistance for Rural Environments

Carrie Courtney received her Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science from Buena Vista University. As a student, Carrie studied abroad for a semester at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia. While in Australia, she interned with the Western Suburbs Regional Organization of Councils (WESROC). As an intern, Carrie created case studies in the areas of sustainability, including case studies focused on native vegetation, sustainable travel and photovoltaic cells. After attaining her Bachelor’s degree, Carrie served with Port Orford Ocean Resource Team via RARE AmeriCorps – Resource Assistance for Rural Environments. Following her second year with the RARE Program, Carrie hopes to find a long term job that suits her educational background and professional goals.

Carrie is placed with Curry Soil & Water Conservation District (Curry SWCD), a special district designated by the State of Oregon – much like a port, library or school district. Conservation districts are charged with directing programs to protect local, renewable natural resources, and the Curry SWCD has a long and proud tradition of working with local farmers and ranchers to develop and implement innovative resource conservation projects. The District also serves as employer and designated fiscal agent for the South Coast and Lower Rogue Watershed Councils.

With Curry Soil & Water Conservation District, Carrie will conduct a comprehensive inventory of regional food systems and resources in Curry County. Carrie will examine local food self-sufficiency including local retail, livable wage farming, and local farmers markets. Additionally, Carrie will work to form partnerships with the local farming and agricultural community as a means to increase involvement, and to increase the ability to produce and market locally grown products.
