Position: Science Advisor, USAID – Global Development Lab
The position of the Science Advisor to the USAID Administrator (Chief Scientist) sits in the U.S. Global Development Lab. As a world-renown scientist, the Science Advisor:
- coordinates and represents the Agency before other scientific institutions, universities, and scientific agencies of the United States Government, and those of foreign states.
- participates in meetings with the Administrator and reports to the Executive Director of the Lab.
- identifies, evaluates, and integrates current and emerging science issues that impact, or are likely to impact, U.S. international development interests and relations with the international donor community and other nations.
- leads the Lab’s engagement with academic institutions both domestically and in developing countries, raises awareness of scientific & research issues with foreign-policy and international- development implications.
- helps the Agency to access external expertise, and provides advice on the appropriate integration of science throughout the Agency.
- sets the Lab’s research direction and agenda, and oversees and advises the Lab research teams.
- sets the Lab’s scientific and research direction as well as develops the Agency’s overall research strategy, and coordinates closely with the Science and Technology Advisor to the Secretary of State and other scientific components in USAID, State Department and other federal agencies.

- To accelerate the transformation of the development enterprise by opening development to people everywhere with good ideas, promoting new and deepening existing partnerships, bringing data and evidence to bear, and harnessing scientific and technological advances.
