Mark Lonergan Receives Tykeson Teaching Award

Mark Lonergan has been selected as a recipient of the UO College of Arts and Sciences’ 2016 Tykeson Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Professor Lonergan was surprised during his thermodynamics class on Tuesday morning, February 2nd, by CAS Associate Dean Hal Sadofsky, Associate Dean Karen Sprague, and Dean Andrew Marcus, who presented the Award to him. UO Chemistry and Biochemistry department head Andrew H. Marcus was also on hand to congratulate Professor Lonergan.

The UO College of Arts and Sciences conferred the first Tykeson Teaching Awards in 2015.  An award is given to one faculty member in each of the CAS divisions, either tenure track or non-tenure track.  Department heads are asked to nominate faculty in their departments who take teaching seriously and do an exceptionally good job.

The awards are presented initially by surprising the winners while they’re teaching a class.  Recipients are later honored more publicly at an annual reception hosted by the CAS Dean.  This year’s celebration will be held on February 15th.
