Student Perspectives

Our current MLA students share their thoughts on why they chose to join us in Oregon, what they value most about the program, and some of their favorite moments here.

Field Work

Our MLA pedagogy isn’t just about the landscape, it’s in the landscape. In Oregon, we are surrounded by diverse ecotypes from coastal shores to old growth forests, the high desert to agricultural valleys, where we can explore global issues. And we find we learn better when we engage people, places, and problems in the field, in Oregon and beyond.

Oregon Sequence

Our second year option studios include the opportunity to take one or more of three sequenced studios, moving from analysis and planning in the fall to site design in winter, and material details in the spring, engaging in depth with a complex landscape and the people who live there over a range of spatial and temporal scales.

Overlook Field School

The summer Overlook Field School offers students a unique opportunity to live, study and create on an evolving cultural landscape, designed over a century ago by the Olmsted firm. With faculty members and visiting artists in residence, students examine the enduring connections between landscape, culture, and production through drawing, critical mapping, and site installations.

APRU Sustainable Cities and Landscapes Hub

The Association of Pacific Rim Universities Sustainable Cities and Landscapes Research Hub, housed at the UO, connects academics, policy makers, and practitioners from across the Pacific Rim to address increasing concerns about the sustainability of cities due to rapid urbanization and population growth worldwide. With scholarship funding from the UO and APRU, our students participate in annual conferences and design field schools in cities across the Pacific rim.

Urban Farm

In operation since 1976, the University of Oregon Urban Farm is a model for alternative urban land use where people grow food, work together, take care of the land, and build community. For over forty years, the Urban Farm has been a place and a process integrating biological, ecological, economic and social concerns.

Landscape for Humanity (L4H) Initiative

Landscape for Humanity is trying to find environmental solutions for our shared future. We research, design, build landscape-based systems for abundant food, energy and water.

Our Mission: We work with landscape as the fundamental framework for creating spatial changes that support social and environmental justice. We do this through design, research and real-world projects.

Our Approach: We increase self-sufficiency through Food-Energy-Water (FEW) by providing flexible solar design, creating edible landscapes, creating a sustainable and portable water supply and measuring the environmental, social, and economic performance of the FEW approach.

HOPES Conference

The Ecological Design Center’s HOPES (Holistic Options for Planet Earth Sustainability) Conference takes place in April. The HOPES Conference is the largest student run conference on sustainability in the world. Since its creation in 1995, the HOPES Conference has remained the only ecological design conference developed and managed by students. HOPES features nationally recognized keynote speakers, expert panel discussions, hands-on workshops, green business expo, a 24-hour design charrette, environmental art, and more!
