Setting up Printers

Note: These instructions are for setting up printers to use A&AA laser printers. Poster printing using A&AA Output Room’s large-format printers do not require printer setup. See Submitting Jobs Print – Poster Printing.


Setting up Printers in Mac OS X 10.7 & Above

NOTE: Apple no longer automatically installs printer drivers in Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) and Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion).

Special Instructions for Setting Up DCLColor: Richo Aficio SP C830DN

Once drivers have been downloaded and installed, please follow these steps:

  1. From the Apple menu select System Preferences. Then in the Hardware section click on “Print & Fax” icon.
  2. Click on the “+” icon to add a new printer to the list of printers.
  3. Click on the “IP” icon.
  4. From the Protocol pop-up menu, select “Line Printer Daemon – LPD”.
  5. In the Address field type “aaa-output.uoregon.edu”, without the quotes.
  6. In the Queue field type the printers name.

  1. In the Name field delete the auto entered text and again type the printers name.
  2. Using the table below, make the following settings:

  1. From the “Print Using” pop-up menu, choose “Select a driver to use”.
  2. In the bottom section of the window, select the model name of the printer. You can narrow the selections by typing the model name into the search field.
  3. Click the “Add” button.
  1. For installable options:
    • HP LaserJet models, check the box for “Duplex Unit” (double-sided printing).
    • Xerox, leave the default options.

Then click “Continue”

Repeat to add additional printers.


Setting Up Printers in Mac OS 10.6

NOTE: In Mac OS 10.6 Apple changed the way it installs printer drivers. Apple only automatically installs printer drivers for the most popular printers. The Xerox Phaser 7800GX that we use for color laser printing is a high-end graphics design printer which does not have the driver installed by default. To install this driver visit:

NOTE: DCL Color printer requires special Instructions. If your computer is running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, please see Setting Up DCLColor Mac OS X 10.6.

  1. From the Apple menu select System Preferences. Then in the Hardware section click on “Print & Fax” icon.
  2. Click on the “+” icon to add a new printer to the list of printers.
  3. Click on the “IP” icon.

  2. In the bottom section of the window, select the model name of the printer. You can narrow the selections by typing the model name into the search field.
  3. Click the “Add” button.

Setting Up Printers in Windows 7

  1. Click on the Start icon and type \\aaa-output.uoregon.edu into the search field and hit Enter.
  2. If asked for a username/password, use your Duck ID username and password (the same as your uoregon email username and password). Type ad\ in front of your Duck ID in the user name box.
  3. A new window will appear. Double click on the printer you wish to install.
  4. You may see a message telling you that the printer has to be setup/installed. Click Yes.
    *NOTE: A message may appear warning you not to install if you do not trust the name or location of the printer. This is Microsoft’s way of protecting you from a malicious application. Click on the Install Driver button.
  5. The printer’s status window will appear. At this point, the printer is set up. Close the status window.
  6. Continue double-clicking on the printer icons until you have set up the printers you need.

Setting Up Printers in Windows Vista

  1. Go to All Programs – > Accessories -> Run
  2. Type \\AAA-OUTPUT.UOREGON.EDU (the backslash key just above the Enter/Return key, followed by AAA-OUTPUT.UOREGON.EDU no spaces.)
  3. Click OK.
  4. If asked for a username/password, use your Duck ID username and password (the same as your uoregon email username and password). Type ad\ in front of your Duck ID in the user name box. Then click OK.
  5. You should see a new window with all of the printers listed. Double-click on the printer you wish to install.
  6. You may see a message telling you that the printer has to be set up on your computer. Click Yes.
    *NOTE: Vista will show you a message that you need to install the printer driver on your computer, and warns you not to install if you do not recognize or trust the name or location of the the printer. This is Vista’s way of protecting you from a malicious application that might be installed without your permission. To finish adding the printer click on the Install Driver button.
  7. The printer’s status window will appear. At this point, the printer is set up. Close the status window.
  8. Keep double-clicking on printers until you have set up as many as you need.

Important: A&AA Computing Services does not support Windows 95, 98, ME, or XP Home. If you are unable to connect to the print server with one of these operating systems, you will have to upgrade your operating system to print.


Setting Up DCLColor Printers

Setting Up DCLColor in Mac OS X 10.7 & newer

NOTE: Apple no longer automatically installs printer drivers in Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) or newer.

  1. Download the following file:
    AAA RICOH Aficio SP C830DN.zip
  2. Double click the downloaded file to un-zip the file. [If using Safari, Safari will un-zip the file automatically.]
  3. Click on Finder in the Dock.
  4. From the Go menu at the top of the screen select Go To Folder.
  5. In the dialog box, type (or copy/paste):
    /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources
  6. Copy the file you un-zipped into the folder Resources.
  7. A dialogue box will pop-up saying, ” The item “AAA RICOH Aficio SP C830DN” can’t be moved because “Resources” can’t be modified.
  8. Click on Authenticate.
  9. A dialogue box will appear asking for Name and Password. Enter the password you use to login or install software. You can now close this folder.

Once the file has been downloaded and copied, please follow these steps:

  1. From the Apple menu select System Preferences. Then in the Hardware section click on “Print & Fax” icon.
  2. Click on the “+” icon to add a new printer to the list of printers.
  3. Click on the IP icon.
  4. From the Protocol pop-up menu, select Line Printer Daemon – LPD.
  5. In the Address field type “aaa-output.uoregon.edu“, without the quotes.
  6. In the Queue field type: DCLColor
  7. In the Name field delete the auto entered text and again type the printers name.
  8. From the Print Using pop-up menu, choose Select a driver to use.
  9. In the bottom section of the window, select RICOH AAA RICOH Aficio SP C830DN. You can narrow the selections by typing the model name into the search field. Click OK.
  10. Click the Add button.
  11. The first time you setup this printer a dialogue box will appear that says, “Some of the software for the printer is missing. The software is available from Apple. Would you like to download and install it?”. Click on the Download & Install button.

The printer should now be ready to use.


Setting Up DCLColor in Mac OS X 10.6

NOTE: Apple does not automatically install printer drivers in Mac OS X 10.6.

  1. Download the PPD Installer for Mac OS X 10.6 from the following website:

  2. Double click the downloaded file to run the Installer. Follow in screen instructions.
  3. Download the following file:
    AAA RICOH Aficio SP C830DN.zip
  4. Double click the downloaded file to un-zip the file.
  5. Click on Finder in the Dock.
  6. From the Go menue at the top of the screen select Go To Folder.
  7. In the dialog box, type (or copy/paste):
    /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources
  8. Copy the file you un-zipped into the folder Resources.

Printer should now be ready to use.
