Jobs for July 24

OK, so I’ve let this job-trolling business go for a month. I have excuses: my computer broke (sob!) and I had to work on summer NSF proposals for July deadlines (weep!). But in the end, I think doing this job posting work once a month will fit my temperament better. I’m putting blogging into the 3rd position in my avocation heirarchy, which means I have to be able to pick it up and leave it as needed. I’ll be writing another post explicitly about avocations for academics and the merits of slacking, and when that post is up I’ll update this one to link to it.

Suffice it to say: from now on I’ll be making these Jobs updates on the fourth Wednesday of the month. [As comic book aficionados will recognize, some months, like this one, have five Wednesdays, which can lead to much gnashing of teeth.] Expect the next jobs update on August 28.

Anohther change in policy: I’m going to post jobs by posting date, not by closing date. Each job will get 1) a title, 2) an indication of full/part time, 3) an indication of tenure track or not, 4) the closing date, if listed, and 5) where I first found the ad. I will hyperlink the job title. If I feel a need to comment on the position, I’ll add that below the link.

This month I found 11 posts, 5 on the tenure track. GSA, SSE, and SVP were all productive. I added EOS at the suggestion of my friend Don Prothero. He just released a book on cryptozoology, but he had to cut the chapter on El Chupacabras. I am dissapoint.

I did not find any appropriate ASM posts. A note: they seem to have redesigned their website to make it impossible to navigate to their job listings from the front page. Someone should tell them. Here is the link, in case you haven’t bookmarked it.

I dropped the Chronicle of Higher Ed and Science because the posts there that didn’t duplicate those from other sources were always very iffy. Plus I’m sleepy and I still have to wash the dishes. If you feel the need to troll those sites, you may go ahead, but EOS has added some important positions that seem more germane to 4D Bio, so I’m sticking with it for now.

Still no ESA posts at all… So I’m dropping them. Maybe I’m looking at their site wrong? I need my ecologist glasses, or something?

July 24 (Today!)

LECTURER OR VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, DEPT OF GEO, UI URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, Full, NTTF, October 1, GSA

July 20

Chief Preparator (Curator II), Utah State U, Full, Non-faculty, August 19, SVP

  • This position (like the one near the bottom) is not for a PhD researcher; it’s for a skilled preparator and field collector. Not to say one couldn’t be both of those things.

July 16

Instructor I Curator, THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW BRUNSWICK, FREDERICTON CAMPUS, Full, TTF, September 15, EOS

  • This is an exciting one, because you’d be teaching and  responsible for the operation of the Quartermain Earth Sciences Centre museum. Quatermain? As in Allan Quatermain? As in King Solomon’s Mines? How could you resist?
  • Actually, it’s not really Allan Quatermain. But one can hope. I can’t find a direct link, but if you want to apply and can’t get to EOS from July 16, let me know and I’ll send you the full ad.

July 15

STRATIGRAPHY/SURFACE PROCESSES, SUNY GENESEO, Full, TTF, October 1, GSA

Assistant Prof., The Ohio State University Lima, OH, Full, TTF, September 16, SSE

  • This one is explicitly about vertebrate biology, and has the chance to teach HONORS STUDENTS. Do not pass it up if you, like me, care about those two things. Plus: THE Ohio State University (Lima).
  • Oh, and SSE doesn’t date the start of their postings, so I’m just dropping this one mid-month.

July 11

VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF GEOSCIENCES, HAMILTON COLLEGE, Full?, NTTF, September 15, GSA

July 8

Fossil Preparator and Lab Manager, Natural History Museum of Utah, Full, Non-faculty, July 26, SVP

  • This job is not for a PhD researcher; it’s for an exceptional preparator. Also it closes in two days! Sorry.

July 2

Postdoc in Ancient Biosignature Detection, Caltech, Full, NTTF, no closing listed, EOS

Postdoctoral researcher in astrobiogeochemistry, Caltech, Full, NTTF, no closing listed, EOS

  • These two positions are linked and are related to finding evidence of early life on earth and on other planets.

Assistant Professor in Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, University of Waterloo, Full, TTF, July 1, EOS

  • Sorry no hyperlink for this one, and the review of candidates actually started before the EOS ad.

Geobiologist, School of Earth Sciences, Stanford University, Full, TTF, August 1, EOS

  • I had listed this post earlier, with a CHE link that’s now dead, so I’m listing it again from its appearance in EOS.
  • They include paleobiology amongst their disciplines in this position, so it’s serious for 4D Bio folks.

Jobs for June 26

I’m going to take the first lines of these job postings to ruminate and/or rant on my insights as I compile listings. Today, I wonder about the diversity of titles applied to both tenure-track and non-tenure-track positions. This week I have a ‘fixed-term’ position listed as ‘Assistant Professor’ and another position listed as ‘Biology Instructor’ that is apparently ‘tenure-track’. I wish we could decide on a set terminology here. Also, the array of ‘Visiting’ and “Adjunct’ positions is bewildering. Perhaps I should do a whole post on position-title waffle words after I compile enough.

Another thought: I don’t know how effective my effort is. If you’re applying for jobs you find here, please let me know, so I’ll have some inspiration to keep making these lists. If you manage to get a job that you found on my blog, please let me know!

This week I found 12 posts that seemed reasonable, two on the tenure track. Science, GSA, SVP, and Chronicle of Higher Ed were productive, but there were no new SSE or ASM posts.

Still no ESA posts at all…

As always, I’m lisiting positions by closing date.

July 8:

Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies, Bemidji State University(Minnesota)

  • Appears non-tenure-track

July 29:

Lecturer in Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, Western Washington University

August 19:

Visiting Assistant Prof, Dominican University

  • This position has an anatomy teaching component, and potential to move to the tenure track
  • They request a PhD in developmental bio, which some 4D biologists I know could be argued to have…

Postdoctoral Scholar in Quantitative Ecology, Northern Arizona

  • They seem to be thinking of a modern ecologist, but I know some paleoecologists who could compete

Biology Instructor (Tenure Track), Barstow Community College

No closing date:

Field Paleontologist, Triebold Paleontology Inc.

  • I can only find this ad on the SVP website, so you’ll have to be a member to see it
  • They seem to want any level of experience, but you have to be able to lift 70 lbs…

Field Studies Instructor, Wildlands Studies

  • This looks interesting, because you get to write your own ticket for teaching a research-intensive field course anywhere in the world…

Assistant Professor in Biology Education, The University of Texas at San Antonio

Visiting Assistant Professor/Limited Term Instructor (intro bio, anatomy, etc.), University of West Georgia

Assistant Professor (non-tenured), Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy

  • Anatomy plus neuroscience and pathophysiology, anyone?

Adjunct or Term Assistant Professor, Barnard College

  • Need to be able to teach animal behavior for this one.

Laboratory Instructor, Barnard College, Department of Environmental Science

Jobs for June 19

Sorry, this week’s 4Dbio jobs report is three days late. I’m going to still try to publish these on Wednesdays, and this report will cover June 13-19. On June 26 I’ll have another report.

I’m late this week because: 1) My wife, Samantha Hopkins, needed the home PC to prep for the 2013 Evolution Meetings, and I was too lazy to either dig out the old laptop or try to compose a blog post on my iPad (doable, but a hassle). and 2) My new-ish home desktop PC died immediately after Sam left for Evolution as though it knew its duty was fulfilled. So I sit here typing on the laptop I bought to complete my postdoc, back in 2007, dusted off to bring y’all another week of jobs postings. I wonder if it will run Bioshock Infinite

Scanning GSA, SVP, Vert Paleo Mailing List, and Chronicle of Higher Ed, I have found five postings that are current, one on the tenure-track. There were no appropriate Science, ASM, SICB or SSE jobs this week. For four weeks now ESA has absolutely no jobs listed…. I’m not judging, but they may fall off my trolling list soon.

Closing July 5:

Here’s one I got on the Vert Paleo Mailing list:

Coordinator of Undergraduate Labs for Earth and Env. Sci, U Illinois at Chicago

Closing July 7:

Another one from the Vert Paleo Mailing list:

Lecturer in Geoscience, University of Leicester.

Closing September 16:

Tenure Track (any level) in stable isotope geochem, Temple U

No closing date:

(COI flag) Our department at UO is seeking a sabbatical replacement to teach intro geo, petrology, field methods, etc. (see the ad for details.)

Lecturer in Geology, University of Houston-Downtown

Jobs for June 12

Scanning SVP and Chronicle of Higher Ed, I have found eight postings that are current, three on the tenure-track. There were no appropriate Science, GSA, ASM, SICB or SSE jobs this week. OK, so for the third week running ESA has no jobs listed at all. Either it’s the wrong time of year for Ecology jobs, or the field is having trouble (I expect the former).

Oh, and the NCSE needs a new director: I see the ad everywhere, and while it’s not exactly an entry-level 4D Bio position, I like NCSE and I want to make sure the message gets out there.

Closes June 21:

Biology Lecturer (ecology), Gonzaga University

Closes June 29:

Fossil Preparator, Two-year position, Field Museum of Natural History.

  • I’ve only seen this ad on the SVP website, and you have to be a member to access it, so no direct link, sorry.

Closes July 26:

Postdoctoral Research Assistant, 24 Months, University of Oxford

  • Environmental Change in the Arabian Peninsula — sounds interesting!

Closes August 1:

Assistant, Associate or Full Professor (geobiology), Stanford University – School of Earth Sciences

  • This is microbio heavy, but an appropriately-themed micropaleo person could fit.

No closing date:

Assistant Professor of Biology (evo-devo), Albright College

  • A very molecular-heavy position, but I know many VPers who could teach SEM and TEM and evo-devo

Biological Sciences Instructor (anatomy-heavy), Arkansas State University – Mountain Home

Professor (desert ecosystems/terrestrial reptiles), Kuwait University

Lecturer-Non-Union – Biology, City Colleges of Chicago – Harold Washington College

Jobs for June 5

In addition to posting links to the positions I find, I’m also compiling a spreadsheet of the number and type of positions posted each week. At the end of a year, I’ll write some sort of semi-insightful post about my findings.

Scanning GSA, Science, Chronicle of Higher Ed, I have found 15 postings that are current, four on the tenure-track. There were no appropriate ASM, SVP, SICB or SSE jobs this week. I’m a little worried about ESA, because they seem to have no jobs listed at all…

Closing June 20:

Professorship in Environmental Science/Ecology, University of Zurich, Switzerland

Closing July 3:

Associate Instructor of Biology, Germanna Community College, Virginia

Closing Aug. 16:

Tenure-track assistant prof in Entomology, University of Lausanne, Switzerland.

  • This position is a stretch, but a clever paleoentomologist could swing it
  • Also attractive b/c it seeks to link with the Museum of Zoology and the Botanical Garden

No Closing Date:

Tutor – Biology (2 Part-Time Positions), City Colleges of Chicago – Malcolm X College

Biology Faculty, Visiting Lecturer, Community College of Philadelphia

Adjunct Instructor–Anatomy, Southwestern Michigan College

Biology Instructor- Adjunct, Contra Costa Community College District, California

  • Includes anatomy + general biology

Assistant Professor in Biology (anatomy, tenure-track), St. Ambrose University

Anatomist (tenure-track), University of Western States, Oregon

  • Vertebrate paleobiologists are often good candidates for anatomy jobs, and this one is TTF.

BIOLOGY INSTRUCTORS, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College

  • Unspecified number of positions.

Full-time Biology Faculty (apparently NTTF), Sullivan County Community College

Post-Doctoral Lecturer, Biology, SUNY Oneonta

Environmental Geologist, Part Time, Drew University.

One-Term Lecturer in Geology, Bates College.

Full-time and part-time adjunct faculty (2+ positions) in general Geology, Occidental College

Jobs for May 29 2013

Scanning GSA, SVP, SICB, ASM, Science, Chronicle of Higher Ed, I have found 18 postings that are current. There were no appropriate ESA jobs this week. This is my first jobs posting, so I’m not surprised to find so many. As we move forward, I’m going to try to put up a compilation each week, so the number of new postings will be smaller. This listing covers over a month’s worth of live advertisements.

Another thing: I’m including a lot of positions that aren’t in North America, because I think that’s only fair. My main criterion for inclusion is imagining that one of the many kinds of 4D biologists I know could wedge him or herself into the position description. Consequently, Geospatial Information Librarian and Biosignatures Investigator are in, but Postdoctoral Associate working on histone deacetylase-4 (HDAC4) in cartilage and bone development is not. Perhaps I do have a paleobiological colleague who feels that work on HDAC4 is within her abilities; if so, please comment below and I’ll try to be more inclusive in the future.

I’ve organized them stratigraphically by closing date, with the latest dates at the top. Also, there is a big stack at the bottom with no closing dates. I’ll keep posting in this way until someone complains.

Closing August 5:

Geospatial Information Librarian (Geology/Earth Sciences), The Ohio State University Libraries

  • A good position for someone interested in processes across the landscape

Closing Tuesday July 23:

Asst. Instructor – Biology, NYU Abu Dhabi campus

Closing Thursday July 4:

One-year Lecturer in Evolution + Marine Biology, American University, Washington DC

Closing Friday, June 21:

Assistant Professorship, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

  • Open call for young researchers ready to lead their own groups.

Closing Thursday, June 20:

Non-tenure Track Faculty (2 positions: Life Sci. and Geology), Clarion University, Penssylvania

Closing Friday, June 14:

Biosignatures Investigator, NASA

  • Looking for signatures of life in past environments is what 4D bio is all about

Open Topic Tenure Track Prof., Technical University Dresden

  • They don’t care about your research topic, as long as you produce results.

Closing Friday, June 7:

Visiting Asst. Prof. – Biology, St Bonaventure University, New York

Closing Monday, June 3:

Research Zoologist / Curator of Vertebrate Zoology, National Museum of Natural History

No closing date listed:

Instructor in Geology, Midland College, Texas

Science Non-tenure Track Faculty, Asian University for Women, Bangladesh

Adjunct Faculty teaching Science, Strayer University, Maryland

Physical Science Adjunct (5 Part Time Positions), City College of Chicago – Malcom X College

Associate Prof. + Lecturer (2 positions), Botswana International University of Science and Technology

Instructor of Biology, University of South Carolina Upstate

Assistant Professor of Anatomy (3 positions), Midwestern University, Glendale Arizona

Vertebrate Paleontology Collections Manager, Cleveland Museum of Natural History

Two-year postdoc in fossil synapsid collections management, Field Museum

I’m compiling 4D Bio job ads!

So, I thought it would be a service to the community if I started posting 4D bio job advertisements that I run across in my websurfing. I know that I’ve often been frustrated by the dispersed nature of jobs for the 4D biologist. You have to follow the jobs at GSA, SVP, ESA, and a whole slew of other neo-biology societies. Plus Science’s job listing and the old Chronicle of Higher Ed listings. Plus others I’m forgetting (which you can post in the comments, if you please!).

My idea is this: I will try to regularly troll the job ads, as I should be doing as a good academic, and I’ll post 4D bio appropriate listings here with a Job Advertisement category and appropriate tags (paleoecology, anatomy, curation, etc.). If you want to find a 4D bio job, you can look for these posts. If you know of other 4D bio jobs that I’ve missed, let me know: if we get enough people contributing, this can become a really useful resource for finding all of those obscure, but vital, positions for folks working on biology in all four dimensions.
